American in Paris + Amériques

March 15-16, 2019

Program and Description

GERSHWIN: An American in Paris
BARBER: Violin Concerto
RAVEL: Tzigane
VARÈSE: Amériques

What’s interesting about this concert:

• American composer George Gershwin’s jazzy postcard from France contrasts French composer Edgard Varèse’ raucous reflection of America.
• Grammy-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich shares playing technique “revealing something from a plane beyond ours” (Washington Post).
• After the lyrical first movements of Barber’s concerto weren’t thought challenging enough, the composer responded with a finale believed unplayable.

This concert is part of Series 1.
