Q & A with Audra McDonald

anchor

Fanfare Cincinnati: This is your first collaboration with the Cincinnati Pops. What are your thoughts on coming to  Cincinnati and performing with the Pops Orchestra?

Audra McDonald: The Pops have an incredible reputation, and I’m really looking forward to making music with them. My music director Andy Einhorn will be with me, and we always enjoy working with new orchestras. It should be a great night!

FC: Are you excited for the program you’ve created for this performance? What pieces are you looking forward to performing, and why did you choose them?

AM: We’ll be doing a mix of standards from the Great American Songbook, some of our favorite show tunes, and newer songs by up-and-coming musical theatre composers who’ve become my dear friends. There will be a little something for everyone.

FC: How did you get your start in musical theater?

AM: From the time I was nine until I graduated from high school, I performed in a dinner theater in my hometown of Fresno, California. As a child, it was a great opportunity for me to channel my energy into an art form. That’s when I really fell in love with performing and embodying characters.

FC: What’s next on the horizon for you?

AM: Aside from being a full-time mom and performing around the country, I’m currently shooting the second season of The Good Fight, which premieres on CBS All Access on March 4.
