A Letter from the President | December 2017

Dear Friends,

Following all of the excitement of our 2017 international tours to Asia and Europe, our venue transition, and of course the Grand Opening of our beloved Music Hall, I think it is important to pause for a moment and simply say, “thank you.”

In this season of giving, I am struck by the generosity and commitment shown toward the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops. To our knowledge, every orchestra that has undergone a major venue transition in recent years experienced double digit declines in subscriptions, but thanks to a loyal subscriber base who stayed with us, Cincinnati bucked that trend last season. Thank you.

When the Orchestra articulated significant needs to the community throughout the transition, business and organizational leaders stepped up, with everything from subscriber parking downtown to providing a temporary home for the largest working orchestra library in the world. Thank you. And, when opportunities were presented to represent Cincinnati in major cities and music festivals around the world, local funders stepped forward to make this possible. Thank you.

When Music Hall was in dire need of attention, the community committed to a renovation and restoration project that not only ensures this iconic treasure remains a vibrant community gathering place, but also one of the world’s greatest concert halls. Thank you.

And finally, as we close out this extraordinary year in the life of the CSO, I am also happy to report the ninth consecutive balanced budget has been achieved thanks to donors, both big and small, from throughout the region. Thank you. The CSO success story would not be possible without your continued support.

I am a new resident, but your actions have served as quick affirmation that this community understands and values its Orchestra. It is also clear to me that this Orchestra is deeply proud to be an integral part of Cincinnati and to serve this community. I think the gratitude can be felt in every performance, and I hope you can feel that, too.

On behalf of the musicians, Board, volunteers and staff of the CSO and Pops, we wish you and yours a safe and joyful holiday season!
