MAHLER: Das Lied von der Erde ("Song of the Earth")


• Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (“Song of the Earth”) is based on 7 gorgeous Chinese poems, with titles such as “Beauty”, “The Farewell”, and… “The Drunkard in Spring”  

• Leonard Bernstein called Das Lied von der Erde Mahler’s “Greatest symphony”

• “Her coffee-colored voice—elegantly focused, with a touch of earth—is both direct and insinuating…” –The New York Times, on mezzo soprano Kelly O’Connor

• “Not since Domingo in his prime can this music have been sung with more complete assurance.” –The Telegraph, on tenor Stuart Skelton

• Opening the program is Schubert’s dramatic 4th Symphony, written when he was only 19—he did not hear it performed in his lifetime
