September 28-29, 2018

Program and Description

STRAVINSKY: Fireworks
SIBELIUS: Violin Concerto
STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring

PROGRAM NOTES

What’s interesting about this concert:

• Violinist Joshua Bell returns with Sibelius’ only violin concerto, a work whose icy and eerie opening melts into expansive passages.
• Written for ballet, Stravinsky’s Rite became one of the most influential orchestral works of the 20th century, enjoying popularity uncoupled from the choreography.
• The primal rhythms of The Rite of Spring depict games and rituals of sages, dances to the earth, and a climactic sacrifice.

This concert is part of Series 2.
