Traveling Musicians

November 2, 2018

Program and Description

Shostakovich reserved his most personal musical statements for the intimacy of chamber music, works less scrutinized by Stalinist censors. He so associated himself with the Quintet that, with the government's permission, he brought the music on his travels inside and outside the Soviet Union and performed the piano part with various string quartets. Delightful music by two renowned 19th-century traveling soloists, flautist Franz Doppler and pianist Carl Reinecke, bring the program home.
