Spring Inspiration

May 12, 2017

Program and Description

Arensky composed his Second String Quartet, dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky, for the unusual combination of violin, viola and two cellos, which adds depth to this emotional music. Amy Beach, America’s first truly successful female composer of large-scale works, used her own “An Indian Lullaby” as the theme for her lovely Theme and Variations. Brahms was inspired to come out of retirement (at age 57!) and write several works dedicated to clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, including the extraordinary Clarinet Quintet— music of great beauty and complexity, with dazzling virtuoso passages for the clarinetist.
