Cabaret and Dance

February 03

Program and Description

Poulenc’s Sextet sets a festive tone for this colorful program, with tunes reminiscent of a French cabaret. From the music halls of Paris we move to a ravishing conversation between flute and harp by Jean-Michele Damase. Brazilian composer João Ripper’s delightful Kinderszenen (“Children’s Scenes”), whose first movement pays homage to Robert Schumann’s own Kinderszenen, is a playful and enchanting work that features Brazilian dance tunes. The program closes with Dvořák’s Dumky Piano Trio, a suite brilliantly crafted to reflect a variety of moods, from solemn to boisterous.
