This season the CSO welcomes four of the world’s most highly-sought active composers who will visit during the season to celebrate new music.

Renowned young composer Nico Muhly is no stranger to composing pieces for great orchestras. Mr. Muhly has composed masterpieces for the American Ballet Theater, American Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Carnegie Hall and many more. Most recently he is praised for his first full scale opera, Two Boys, which was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center Theater and the English National Opera. Two Boys premiered in London in spring 2012 and has been receiving rave reviews from major news journals. Nico Muhly also has high achievements in composing for film; in 2008 Mr. Muhly composed works for best picture nominee, The Reader. Mr. Muhly is very active with visiting and inspiring music hopefuls; he visited Northern Kentucky University, The University of Cincinnati and the School for Creative Performing Arts last fall.  The CSO will be performing a world premiere piece written by Nico Muhly during the MusicNOW program on Friday, March 21, 2014.

David Lang is one of America’s most performed composers. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards including the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for music for the little match girl passion, Musical America’s 2013 Composer of the Year and Carnegie Hall’s Debs Composer’s Chair for 2013-2014. Mr. Lang is constantly praised for his talents and the CSO is honored to commission a world premiere piece as part of the MusicNOW program on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

JUNO nominated composer John Estacio has served as composer in residence for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, the Calgary Opera, and Pro Coro Canada. Mr. Estacio has composed mainly operatic and orchestral music, as well as a few chamber and choral works. His award-winning music includes commissions from many orchestras, ensembles and associations, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Radio Orchestra, the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and the Penderecki String Quartet. The CSO performs his orchestral work Borealis on Friday and Saturday, October 4-5, 2013.

Award-winning American composer William Perry has earned critical acclaim throughout his long career for his contributions to orchestral, stage, television and film music. He has also composed the scores of many silent films, and is often credited with helping revive public interest in the genre. His music has been performed by major orchestras all of the world. The CSO’s own Principal Trumpet Robert Sullivan performs Mr. Perry’s Trumpet Concerto with the Orchestra on October 4-5, 2013.
